TRANCE DANCING WITH THE JINN
August 27, 2:00 pm—5:00 pm
For centuries African and Middle Eastern women have used trance dancing to cure physical and mental ailments. Followers of the Zar cult believe their illnesses are caused by “red spirits” – a subspecies of Jinn – who use human bodies as hosts. Connecting with spirit through movement is popular in the West, as well.
Promoted in the 1980s as a tool for self-knowledge and therapy, “dancing until you drop” is practiced around the world by many different denominations. Yet it is an ancient practice, rooted in the Paleolithic.
This workshop, based on the instructor’s book, Trance Dancing with the Jinn, is a practical overview of traditional Middle Eastern trance dance rituals (Islamic zikr, Sufi whirling and the zar), the history behind them, the science behind trance, a description of the Jinn, the music used to call these entities and a ritual to experience them first hand. Come learn Middle Eastern trance dancing from a dancer with over 40 years of performance and teaching experience.
